The Bengal Defender Finding a Second Home in Goa: A Conversation with Sporting’s Narayan Das

The 2026 season has entered a critical stretch for Sporting Clube de Goa. Known as the “Flaming Oranje,” the club is currently managing a busy schedule across the Goa Professional League (GPL) and I-League 2. Following recent fixtures, Sporting has moved into 4th place in the I-League 2 standings, earning 7 points from 5 matches. A key factor in this steady run has been a disciplined backline that has conceded only four goals so far.

Veteran defender Narayan Das has been a consistent presence in this defensive setup. The 32-year old footballer has started the last four matches, providing a reliable and experienced head during a 1-0 win over Sudeva Delhi FC and a 1-1 draw against Karbi Anglong Morning Star FC. As the team prepares for upcoming GPL games against Calangute Association and FC Goa, we spoke with Das about his transition to the club and his outlook for the season.

The Journey to the Flaming Oranje

Narayan’s football journey began in his hometown in Bengal, playing on local grounds with friends. His interest in the game eventually led to serious training, and in 2008, he joined the Tata Football Academy (TFA). “From that point on, I never looked back,” he says, marking the academy as the place where his professional path truly started.

Despite his years of experience in the top tiers of Indian football, joining Sporting Clube de Goa felt like a significant step. He noted that the club’s history made his first training session feel special. “I was a little nervous on the first day,” he admits. “But at the same time, I was very motivated to work hard, prove myself, and give my best for the club.”

Lessons in Teamwork and Discipline

Having moved through several clubs during his career, Das believes the most important lesson he brings to Goa is the value of discipline. He maintains that football is not just about individual talent, but about how a squad functions together. “The biggest lesson I learned from my previous clubs is the importance of discipline and teamwork,” he explains. “It’s about working together as a team and staying focused to achieve our goals.”

This team-first mentality is reflected in his playing style. Das describes himself as a high-energy defender who focuses on maintaining intensity and supporting his teammates. While his primary job is to stay focused in defense, he looks to help in transition whenever possible. He identifies his work rate and determination as his strongest attributes—traits that have helped Sporting maintain one of the better defensive records in the league this month.

Focusing on the 2026 Campaign

With the GPL and I-League 2 running at the same time, the physical demands on the players are high. Das is currently focusing on his fitness to ensure he can remain consistent throughout the heavy run of fixtures. “This season, my focus is on giving consistent performances and helping the team win the I-League 2 title,” he says.

To handle the pressure of the matchday, he relies on a straightforward pre-match routine. He prefers to stay calm, listening to music and stretching properly to prepare himself mentally. This disciplined approach is something he admired in his childhood idol, Deepak Mondal. He credits Mondal’s professionalism as a major influence on his own career path.

As Sporting Clube de Goa pushes for the top spot, Das remains committed to the daily grind. He expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to represent the club and emphasized how much the players rely on the energy of the crowd. “I want to ask the fans to keep supporting us,” he says, “because their support motivates us to give more than 100% in every match.”
