In the ever-changing landscape of Indian football, where players and coaches come and go, Anju Albuquerque stands as a beacon of constancy. For a quarter of a century, he has been the unwavering presence behind Sporting Clube de Goa, serving as the club’s team manager since its inception.
As Sporting Clube enters its 25th year, Albuquerque reflects on his journey with a mixture of pride and nostalgia. “It feels like yesterday and a lifetime ago at the same time,” he says, his eyes crinkling with a smile. “This club, it’s not just my job. It’s my family, my home.”
Over the years, Albuquerque has seen it all – the highs of triumphs, the lows of relegations, and now the resurgence under Armando Colaco’s tutelage. “Each season brings its own challenges, its own stories,” he muses. “But the spirit of Sporting, that never changes.”
His role extends far beyond typical managerial duties. Players, past and present, speak of Albuquerque as a father figure, a confidant, and the glue that holds the club together.
Former Sporting striker Marcus Mascarenhas recalls, “Anju sir was always there, in good times and bad. He knew when to push us and when to protect us. Without him, Sporting wouldn’t be Sporting.”
Current coach Armando Colaco stated, “Anju is the heart of this club,” Colaco asserts. “His institutional knowledge, his rapport with the players – it’s invaluable. He makes my job easier.”
As for the future, Albuquerque shows no signs of slowing down. “Retire? Why would I retire from living?” he laughs. “As long as Sporting needs me, I’ll be here. We’ve got I-League 2 to conquer now, and who knows what’s next?”
Looking back on 25 years of memories, Albuquerque becomes thoughtful. “You know, it’s not about the trophies or the promotions. It’s about the lives we’ve touched, the careers we’ve shaped. That’s the real legacy of Sporting Clube.”
As Sporting Clube de Goa embarks on its next chapter, one thing remains certain – Anju Albuquerque will be there, as he has been for the last 25 years, ensuring that the Flaming Oranje burns bright both on and off the pitch.
“This club gave me a purpose,” Albuquerque concludes, gazing out over the training ground. “And I’d like to think I’ve given it my life in return. Here’s to another 25 years!”
