The road to the top tier of Indian football begins again on March 28th as Sporting Clube de Goa prepares to launch their I-League 2 campaign. At the helm of this charge is Malcolm Mervin Gonsalves, a 26-year-old manager whose deep-rooted connection to the club and “discipline-first” philosophy are shaping the team’s pursuit of promotion.
A native of Ribandar, Panjim, Gonsalves is no stranger to the weight of the “Flaming Orange” jersey. His journey with the club started nearly a decade ago in the U-14 ranks. While a serious injury cut his playing career short, it paved the way for a transition into technical leadership. After securing his AIFF D and AFC C coaching licenses, Gonsalves served as a youth coach before being appointed manager of the senior team.
A Vision Built on Mentality and Clarity
For Gonsalves, the objective for the upcoming month is singular and uncompromising. “The goal has been clear since day one,” he explains. “It is to win the I-League 2 and qualify for the Indian football league.”
Success in such a competitive environment requires more than just tactical drills; it requires a specific locker-room culture. Gonsalves notes that the current team spirit is fueled by a mix of high-level talent and a collective commitment to the promotion race. When it comes to management, he leans on two pillars: communication and clarity.
“I want the players to understand what we expect from them,” says Gonsalves. “I always encourage teamwork, discipline, and continuous improvement as a team.”
Overcoming the Grind: “Diamonds are Formed Under Pressure”
The I-League 2 is often described as a marathon rather than a sprint, and Gonsalves is fully aware of the pitfalls. He identifies consistency as the biggest challenge facing the squad this year.
“It’s not just about performing well in one match,” he notes. “It’s about keeping the same focus, intensity, and mentality throughout the entire season.” To maintain this edge, he enforces a strict code of conduct. In his locker room, discipline is the only non-negotiable rule, viewed as the essential foundation for achieving any long-term goal.
On a personal level, Gonsalves draws strength from his own setbacks. Transitioning from a player to a manager at a young age requires resilience, and he often cites a favorite quote to keep his perspective sharp: “Diamonds are formed under high pressure.” This mindset has kept him grounded as he manages the expectations of one of Goa’s most loved football clubs.
The Final Piece: The Fans
As the opening whistle on March 28th approaches, Gonsalves is calling on the Goan football community to turn out in force. To him, a perfect season involves less about the points table and more about the quality of football on the pitch and the atmosphere of the fans’ energy in the stands.”The fan support definitely helps the team and motivation at every given point,” he says. “We urge everyone to be there, show your support, and create an amazing atmosphere.” His ultimate dream for the season? To not only win the league but to do so by playing “amazing football which everyone would appreciate.”
